I also just really enjoyed being scared and grossed out by a book. I’ve always wondered about these things, how different marginalisations would affect people in an apocalypse, but this is the first book I’ve read that’s actually addressed them. I loved how Henry explored the additional dangers that women, people of colour and disabled people might face in an apocalypse situation - not being able to outrun danger, having to plan for unforeseen health issues, racists and rapists coming out of the woodwork with no one to inhibit their bigoted views. Red is a fantastic protagonist - biracial, bisexual, and she has a prosthetic leg - and Henry makes sure that those things that shape her perspective also shape how she moves through the story as well. It’s full of Christina Henry’s trademark horror and takes the apocalypse story to a whole new level. I’ve been looking for a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood for so long and I’m so glad this was the one I found. After all, it’s a long way to go in a world full of wolves. They have to make it to their grandmother’s rural cottage before it’s too late. A deadly virus called the Cough has killed her parents and there’s some sort of parasite bursting out of people’s chest - at least according to her brother, Adam. She’s got her bags all packed with everything she might need for a trek through the forest.

Red is on her way to her grandmother’s house. “There are a lot of monsters out there, and all of them look like humans.”
